Day 17: On the Shelf

“I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves.”
 -Anna Quindlen

Books, books and more books.  These are what you'll find the greatest majority of on my shelves.  We are voracious readers in our family.  And though Bryan prefers his books to come electronically on his Kindle, the rest of us regularly haunt Barnes and Noble and Amazon for books to read and then store on our book shelves.  And it's worth it to buy them because we also tend to be people who re-read and share our books regularly.

I also try to intersperse holiday decor and various knick-knacks around and between the piles of books on my shelves.  Right now my study is all decked out for Halloween.  I enjoy decorating these shelves especially because not only is it my favorite room of the house, the study is right off the front entry way in our home which means it's the first thing people see when they come to visit.

This is a shot of the bookshelf in mine and Bryan's bedroom.  These shelves house a lot of books that are on my "to-read" list.  I do a lot of my reading in bed before I drop off to sleep so having a book shelf in my room is handy.  (Isn't that owl book end fun?  My friend Mindy gave it to me for my birthday as I am a little bit obsessed with owls right now...)
Book shelves in the study, in the family room, in the TV/sitting room, in my bedroom and each of four kid's bedrooms.
Books on shelves in almost every room of the house.
Yes, I am my mother's daughter.  Go here to see how many books SHE has.  I promise you...it is truly impressive!

Your mother and my MIL are kindred spirits - books everywhere. When Matt went to private school in Minn. for his senior year, his mom sold her books to pay for plane tickets out there... she's quickly rebuilt quite a collection again. I love to buy children's books but I'm more of a library fan for my own reads because of the expense and because if I get too many I feel cluttery. I've been thinking of adding some built in bookshelves in my front room - they don't feel cluttery if you've got enough room to display them nicely like you've got them. :)

Your shelves look awesome. I love that you included the owl in your post, I still love him.
