Favorite Photo Friday

March 2012

This little girl has been sleeping in my bed all week long. Bryan has been on a business trip since Sunday afternoon and like her big brother before her, Lilian has decided that when Dad is gone, she gets to take his warm and cozy spot in bed with Mom. Truth be told, it's kind of nice to have a warm body there. Though I'm thankful that Bryan doesn't travel anywhere near as much as he used to, I still really don't like it when he goes. Oh I've learned to be all sorts of independent when he is gone. I'm pretty good at doing the single mom thing. But there is still that something about late nights after I've sent the kids to bed and shut down the house....quiet. And every creak and bump that the house makes as it settles, the shadows down the hall, the dark windows looking out to the black nothingness of the field behind the house. Well, it all still has the ability to make me a tad jumpy, even after all these years. So to cuddle up with a warm little Lilian as I go to sleep is rather comforting.

Bryan should be walking in the door any second now. I'm so glad....even if Lilian is a little sad to lose that coveted spot in my big bed.

Favorite Photo Friday: The anticipation of snow

November 23, 2010

I'm loving the fall weather. Have you noticed that the fall leaves are now doing exactly that...falling. A breeze blows by and leaves drop like rain. It's so pretty. Then, as if anything could be more delightful...after the leaves make it to the ground, they crunch underfoot. And that, my friends, is one of the best sounds in the world to me. I go out of my way to crunch as many of them as I can when I'm walking around outside.

But do you know what else is great about fall? The anticipation. Of the upcoming holidays. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. But also snow. Glorious snow! And I know that come February, though I'll still be happy about each and every snow storm that comes my way (especially because storms seem to be few and far between these past years) the snow will be more of a normal winter thing. But in fall, the anticipation of snow makes me downright giddy!

And yes, that little pop of color amidst the white flakes and the black night, is Rebekah and her friend Casey out (barefoot) in the wet and slushy street doing some sort of welcome-snow-happy-dance.

Favorite Photo Friday: Cousin Make-over

July 2011

Lilian adores having cousins close to her age. And luckily for her, she has scads of them on both mine and Bryan's side of the family. This is Lara, Kevin and Kari's daughter. Summer 2011 all five of their children stayed with us for a couple of days while Kevin and Kari celebrated an anniversary or birthday. (Can't remember which.) Anyhow, Julianne and Rebekah decided to do a "make-over" and photo shoot with the younger girls (Lilian, Lara and Kaitlyn) to keep them entertained. And though I'm not a big proponent of young kids wearing make-up....don't they look cute in a dress-up sort of way? (Kevin and Kari's children have the most amazingly beautiful eyes, don't you think?)

Favorite Photo Friday: Sleepy Kaden

I pretty much took the summer off from my Favorite Photo Friday series.  It wasn't a conscious decision...it kind of just happened.  Because of a computer that was MIA for a few months, I didn't have easy access to a lot of my older pictures.  Nor was my scanner working which meant I couldn't use even older pictures that I did have access to because there was no way to get them from scrapbook to computer.  Anyhow...it's back!  Feel free to do a little happy dance if you wish. (Ha!)

May 2, 2009

This my youngest sister "Aunt Rachel" who loves all of her nieces and nephews "thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much!!!"  (You'll have to imagine the outstretched arms that goes along with this pronouncement).  And this baby is my sister Mary's little Kaden.  A mom and sisters trip to St. George is the backdrop for this setting in May of 2009.  Rachel, a newlywed in Cedar City, was due to move to Atlanta with her husband the next month.  So we flew Mary and Kaden in from Texas and and road-tripped our way down to St. George, picking up Rachel on the way to spend some girly time together before the big departure.  We made an impromptu visit to Kiddie Kandids to get some portraits of the five of us and while we were there little Kaden tuckered out in Aunt Rachel's arms....right before my eyes (or camera lens, as the case may be). As fast as I could take the pictures...that's literally how fast he fell asleep.

Mary, Kaden and the rest of their family live in Idaho now.  Much closer than Texas, so though I don't see them as often as I wish, it's still not too many months in between visits.  But Rachel continues on in Atlanta while her husband finishes up pharmacy school.  And I'm missing her tremendously today.

(And yes...that is my dad standing outside the window in the blue shirt.  It being a girls weekend notwithstanding, these were his girls...so he decided to tag along.)

Favorite Photo Friday: Times Square

May 11, 2011

One year ago today I was here...Times Square in NYC, having just had lunch at the famous Roxy's Deli and getting ready to see "Anything Goes" on Broadway.
This is what I wrote on my blog later that night when I got back to my hotel:

I had my first experience with Times Square today. I thought I was prepared for it. I'd seen pictures, I'd seen video. Regardless, I was still stunned. Because those pictures do not do it justice. I found myself out there in the middle of it all...the signs, the colors, the lights, the noise and the people...and turned circle after circle to take it all in. I have tried really hard to fit in this week. To act with confidence and like I know exactly where I am going and what I am doing...just like a native. Once in Times Square, though, I have no doubt that I looked every inch the epitome of a visitor...with "tourist" rolling off me in waves. I could not stop the awe from showing on my face.

I am aching to go back to NYC.

Favorite Photo Friday

It's like one of those screen tests:
Pensive
Mad
Upset...maybe sad?
Scared...or maybe surprised?

Favorite Photo Friday

Rebekah, June 1997
What does it say about me as a mother....that when my curious 13 month old climbed into the media cabinet and then got stuck...instead of immediately rushing to her aid, I grabbed the camera first?

Favorite Photo Friday: Reflections on grocery shopping...

January 2012

Trying in vain to get Lilian to pose for a picture...she was having way too much fun at the Children's Museum to pay any sort of attention to me...I finally resorted to getting a shot of her reflection in the mirror.  Being that she was in a corner, I happily ended up with three versions in one of Lilian and her grocery shopping role play.

Favorite Photo Friday: Friends

 Summer 2008

Rebekah and Julianne with friends Deidra and Tiffany... savoring one of the last days of freedom before heading back to school.

Photography credits go to a 7-year old Brandon.  And yes, that is a hint of his thumb in the corner of the picture....the only evidence left of my attempt to crop out the whole rest of his hand.

Favorite Photo Friday: Lush Lashes

October 2011

Prep work in creating a Halloween costume led to discovery of and experimentation with my false eyelashes that I keep on hand for when I am in a play.  So much did Rebekah enjoy the extra lush eyelash look that she wore them to each and every Halloween party, dance and event....despite the fact that her costume changed with each.  False eyelashes...apparently they go with everything.

Favorite Photo Friday: Beach Bums

January 2006

A Caribbean cruise brought our young family to this gorgeous beach in Cozumel.  I love the matching swimsuits on Rebekah and Julianne...the crisscross straps on their backs, the turquoise blue matching the color of the  water.  I love the way their heads are thrown back slightly to avoid the salty spray on their face as the wave crashes into their laps.  But mostly right now, I love the way the memory of this obviously warm Caribbean day is making me feel...as I shiver through a very wintery cold and windy February day.

Favorite Photo Friday: Happy 14th Julianne!

Julianne turned 14 today.  She came home from school with plenty of stories of hugs, a decorated locker, birthday songs, surprises and treats.  She's got some really great friends.  Her birthday party is tomorrow morning...a big sit-down brunch with 8 of her besties.

This picture was taken on Julianne's 2nd birthday in 2000.  She kept spinning happy, dizzy circles and squealing "Halloweena!"  Which, we determined, was a cross between Halloween (dressing up) and Ballerina.  Cute little thing, isn't she?

Favorite Photo Friday: Being silly with Rebekah and friends

These are recent pictures...January 2012, in fact....just a few weeks ago.  Normally I use older pictures for Favorite Photo Friday...photos with a story behind them.  This is just the opposite.  I don't know where they were, what they were doing there or why they took these pictures.  I don't even recognize all the faces.  But Rebekah sure looks pretty.  And I couldn't help but giggle.

Favorite Photo Friday: Unhappy Brandon

August 2007

Buying a house is a pretty big deal.  Because realistically, it's more than just buying a house.  Especially when you are looking for a place to settle for the long haul.  The neighborhood, the community, the schools....but mostly, will this house be a home?  Throughout the decision making process, I made a lot of spur of the moment drives that ended with me in the idling car, staring up at the under construction house and trying to imagine ourselves in it.  Was this to be our future home...or not?  (It was.)

Six year old Brandon was less than thrilled about this particular spur of the moment drive.  Mostly about the fact that I made him come with me when he would've much preferred to be doing something else entirely.  And judging from the look on his face...he wasn't shy about making sure his displeasure was known.

Favorite Photo Friday: Snow?

November 2010

Dear Mother Nature:
This picture is a reminder of what this time of year is supposed to look like.  I can only assume you must have forgotten seeing as it's 54 degrees outside right now.  Or maybe you've just got us mixed up with some other state that spends winter a little more warmly than we usually do?  We here in Utah have four distinct seasons...remember?  We're setting a state record for having the least amount of snow in December EVER.  This is not a good thing, in my opinion.  I ADORE winter...but even if that doesn't make you take pause, how about this?  Water tables and the skiing industry (Best Snow On Earth!) all rely on you as well.  New Years Day is fast approaching.  Maybe a resolution to churn out more snow and cold weather is in order....just a thought.
In the meantime, I'll try to be more patient.

Favorite Photo Friday: Wedding Prep

Bryan and I got engaged March 21, 1993...which meant that by April I was fully immersed in planning a wedding that was scheduled to take place in mid-July.  Weekends home from college were jam-packed as I tried to fit in dress shopping and decisions on invitations, reception centers and flowers along with homework and precious time with my fiance.  This is a picture of my sister Katie...who is 18 months younger than me and a senior in high school at the time...and myself pouring over a wedding magazine.  My day planner and brochures from various wedding service businesses also spread out across the table...ah, it was an exciting time.  And though my 19-year old self made some decisions then that my older self would never make now (realistically, what woman doesn't want a dress do-over?) I immensely enjoyed putting my beautifully perfect wedding together.

Favorite Photo Friday: Little Turkeys

A Thanksgiving themed Family Home Evening in 1999 with the cousins.
Megan, Jordan, Rebekah and Julianne

This picture was taken twelve years ago.
Which means that these little toddlers are now teenagers....
How crazy is that?

I could go into all sorts of philisophical musings about the way time flies.
I could ponder on the difference between raising my oldest child vs. raising my youngest {I don't tend to do cutsie crafts like this with Lilian...} and how I feel about it.
I could delve deep into the relationships between these cousins and how they have changed over the years.
I could even go all out on my Pilgrim ancestors and why Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.  {Actually, you can probably expect a post like that early next week...}

But I'm going to do none of the above tonight.  Because I am way too tired.....

Favorite Photo Friday: HAFB

October 2008
Checking out the planes at the Hill Air Force Base museum over the long UEA weekend.
This was Plan B.
After Plan A {a trip down to St. George} got mercilessly axed by my husband.
(In fairness, he didn't really know of my hankering for a trip, and was in the middle of a project at work...too busy to get away.)
Not quite as exciting as a weekend out of town.
But still interesting all the same.

Favorite Photo Friday: Autumn

A few of my favorite Autumn pictures:

Niagara Falls, New York  October 2006.  This is actually the American Falls to the side of the majestic Niagara Falls...but the trees were so beautiful just beyond the water, the contrast so interesting against the dark, storm filled clouds.

Also New York in October 2006, but this time Palmyra at the Joseph Smith Farm.

The Heber Valley Train ride last October 2010.

Today is the first day of Autumn and I couldn't be more pleased.  Autumn is my favorite season and here are a few reasons why:

*Crisp, cool temperatures
*The "smell of Fall"...what is that exactly?
*The leaves turning colors
*The crunching sound the leaves make when you step on them
*BYU football
*General Conference
*Marie Callendars pie sale
*Sweaters
*Boots
*Paradise Bakery's gingerbread cookies
*Soups
*Hot chocolate
*Pumpkin patches
*Autumn decor
*The anticipation of the upcoming holidays...Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas

Despite what the calendar may say, however, I don't really start thinking Autumn till October.  Here in Utah we tend to have decidedly un-Autumn like warm temperatures through September.  It makes me irrationally grumpy if I'm in full on Autumn mode.  So I don't pull out the decor or put away the flip flops until October is firmly established.  Case in point...I went swimming this afternoon at a neighbors house and then got a pedicure resulting in pink toenails with cute little flowers on them.  Not very autumn like.
So though I still have a couple of weeks before I really revel in Autumn, this date on the calendar does make me excited.  It means it's close!!!
